NOVO7 is a $99 Android 4

NOVO7 is a $99 Android 4.0 ICS tablet with a 7" capacitive screen

One of the beauties of the open and free nature of Android is that it allows the creation of very affordable devices. The Chinese manufacturer MIPS technology seized this opportunity and created the NOVO7 – a 7″ Ice Cream Sandwich slate that only costs $99.

With its 1GHz single-core CPU and 444 MHz GPU (of unknown kind), the NOVO7 will hardly be a benchmark champion, but that’s hardly its purpose. What matters is that it comes with a capacitive touchscreen (most ultra-cheap slates still use resistive screens), and can play all kinds of video formats up to 1080p resolution.

It’s battery is said to last for 6 hours of gaming (Gameloft’s Spiderman comes preinstalled by the way), 8 hours of video or 7 hours of browsing. Plus the 2 megapixel main camera and the front-facing snapper of unknown resolution are better than what the iPad 2 can offer, right?

There are a couple of bad news, though. First, MIPS Technology hasn’t mentioned anything about the resolution of the NOVO7, which leads us to believe that it makes do with WVGA. And also, while the $99 price tag is really attractive the $60 shipping is spoiling it a bit. Still, $159 for an ICS tablet is not a lot now, is it?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 pays us a visit

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 pays us a visit, we shoot it on video

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 has only recently been announced. It sits somewhere between the X10 mini and the original X10 both size and feature-wise. It’s cute, that’s for sure and it seems like a perfect mix of the two X10′s. It’s still compact and easy to handle, but visually it looks more able-bodied than the diminutive X10 mini.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8

For the XPERIA X8 Sony Ericsson has used the same single-widget-per-single-page homescreen layout that we saw on the X10 mini. They’ve gone for that since X8 has a relatively smallish screen. I think 3-inches is as low as Android smartphones with HVGA resoution have gone down.

So yes, it’s a pixel-dense screen (3-inches, 320 x 480 pixels) and any other layout would have made some items on-screen a bit too small. I can see the logic, but I’d still prefer the regular layout, which is more feature-rich. But that’s just me, I guess.

We’ve prepared a not-so-short video demo to take you throughout the interface. As you will see, X8 performs admirably in most situations. It’s a great compact smartphone, which, as we hear, would be pretty temptingly priced (rumored at 200 euro). So enjoy the show, we’ll get back to you with a more detailed preview in our regular fashion.

P.S. This baby is still a pre-release version, so software changes are likely, though I’d say, there won’t be anything major.

The new iPad browser benchmarks are here

The new iPad browser benchmarks are here

Lots of people are using the iPads just for web browsing so naturally the browser benchmarks matter a lot. We’ve put all the three iPads and the Transformer Prime through SunSpider and Browser Benchmark and the results are now out.

Long story short – the new iPad seems to offer the same browsing performance as the iPad 2.

Shocker? Don’t think so. Both the new iPad and the iPad 2 use same CPUs – the major player responsible for most of those scores. Surely the bigger screen offers a lot more viewing estate, but this is where the new GPU kicks in, so no game changer in the scores here either.

The new iPad 3 scores equal if not marginally lower results than the iPad 2 on both test. See for yourselves.

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus battery life test results are in

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus battery life test results are in

Yesterday we published our in-depth Galaxy S II Plus review and now is the time to share the details of its battery test with you.

The smartphone offers the same battery as its predecessor, but offers a more efficient chipset and a new Android release, which should lead to an improvement in its endurance.

Our first test, as usual, is all about talking. The Samsung Galaxy S II Plus did a lot better than the original Galaxy S II (Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs) lasting 11 hours of 3G calls – an excellent score. Don’t forget to use the EXPAND button for more results.

Finally, on the video playback test the Plus battery died at exactly 10 hours – one of the top 8 results in our chart so far – two hour more from its Galaxy S II sibling. We suppose the Broadcom GPU has to be credited here.
